EIB may be used for inpatient hospitalization for the employee only, effective the first day of absence. However, ETO will be paid for the first 24 hours until the appropriate verification is received by the department director/supervisor/timekeeper.

Can you take time off work for cosmetic surgery?

Depending on the type of cosmetic surgery they undertake, they may need time off to attend appointments in run up to surgery and then time off to undergo the procedure and recover. Employees do not have a statutory right to time off to attend medical appointments.

There is no statutory right to time off for a person who elects to have surgery however they are more than likely to be unfit for work for a period of time following the surgery. For the purpose of statutory sick pay, (SSP) it is irrelevant that the employee’s ill health may have been self –induced.

Can I use my sick leave for elective surgery?

Medical appointments and elective surgeries that are pre-arranged can only be covered by sick leave if an employee is not able to work because of a personal illness or injury. An employer can ask for evidence from an employee to confirm that they were unfit for work.

EIB leave is available only after it is accrued and may never be used in advance. You must use 16 hours (pro-rated based on FTE) of PTO or other paid leave before accessing EIB. However, you may be able to directly access EIB in the following situations: Leave that is pending or approved by the HR Leave Center.
