Clonus reflex is a set of rhythmic, involuntary muscle movements. It is a neurological condition that affects the nerve cells that control muscle movements. Damage to the nerves, as in clonus, causes involuntary muscle contractions or spasms. It leads to muscle tightness and pain.
What does clonus feel like?
Clonus is a type of neurological condition that creates involuntary muscle contractions. This results in uncontrollable, rhythmic, shaking movements. People who experience clonus report repeated contractions that occur rapidly. It’s not the same as an occasional muscle contraction.
How do you assess for clonus?
The ankle clonus reflex is assessed by performing a rapid forced dorsiflexion of the foot and then holding slight tension on the foot in the dorsiflexed position. Rhythmic contractions of the gastrocnemius muscle resulting in plantar flexion of the foot indicate a normal response.
What does positive clonus indicate?
The initial brisk dorsiflexion and sustained pressure can be done with slight eversion of the foot. A positive Clonus sign is recorded when the examiner feels and sees the oscillations against this pressure. Rhythm and number of beats can be appreciated.
Can you test yourself for clonus?
To check for Ankle Clonus, move the foot up and down a few times and then sharply dorsiflex the ankle and maintain the pressure. Normally, there is no response, but occasionally a few beats of alternating flexion and extension of the ankle may occur.
What causes muscle clonus?
The most widely accepted explanation is that hyperactive stretch reflexes in clonus are caused by self-excitation. Another alternative explanation for clonus is central generator activity that arises as a consequence of appropriate peripheral events and produces rhythmic stimulation of the lower motor neurons.
Do babies have clonus?
Clonus can be physiologic, for instance, term infants can be hyperreflexic, and a few beats of clonus can be a normal finding in this population; however, most infants will not exhibit this finding, and most infants who will go on to demonstrate cerebral palsy will not exhibit clonus.
Does clonus go away?
The outlook for clonus may depend on the underlying cause. Where a sudden injury or illness causes clonus and muscle spasms, the symptoms will likely go away over time or respond well to physical therapy. Chronic conditions, such as MS, meningitis, or a stroke, may require long-term treatments for symptom management.
Can dogs have clonus?
The dog gets very excited when you scratch his tummy (excitement can trigger clonus). Just as a dog’s leg stops moving if you stop scratching, clonus stops if the vibration stops. Weight bearing on the leg (Pressing down on the leg) and changing of the leg’s position also seem to work.
What is the difference between clonus and spasticity?
Spasticity and clonus result from an upper motor neuron lesion that disinhibits the tendon stretch reflex; however, they are differentiated in the fact that spasticity results in a velocity dependent tightness of muscle whereas clonus results in uncontrollable jerks of the muscle.
What is extensor plantar response?
Definition: A reflex characterized by upward movement of the great toe and an outward movement of the rest of the toes, when the sole of the foot is stroked. It is a normal reflex up to the age of two. Its presence beyond that age indicates neurological damage.
How long does clonus last?
Studies have shown clonus beat frequency to range from three to eight Hz on average, and may last a few seconds to several minutes depending on the patient’s condition.
What is Pregnancy clonus?
Although brisk or hyperactive reflexes are common during pregnancy, clonus is a sign of neuromuscular irritability that usually reflects severe pre-eclampsia.
