Triquetrum Fracture

Triquetrum Fracture

A triquetral fracture is a common type of wrist injury. Depending on the severity of the fracture, you’ll need anywhere from a month to a year to heal. While many make a full recovery, some notice lingering stiffness in their hand or wrist.

How long does it take for a triquetral fracture to heal?

Most simple fractures heal in 6-12 weeks. Return to driving: You can return to driving 5 weeks after your injury.

How is a triquetral fracture treated?

Immobilization with a split, cast, or brace for 4 to 6 weeks is standard treatment for a triquetral fracture. Immobilization holds the bone in place so that it is properly aligned as it heals. Your doctor may add occupational therapy and wrist exercises as part of the treatment.

Are triquetral fractures common?

The triquetrum is the second most common carpal fracture after the scaphoid, representing 13 to 28 percent of all carpal bone injuries [1-4].

Why does my triquetrum hurt?

A Triquetral fracture is a break of the Triquetral bone (sometimes called triquetrum). It is one of the eight small carpal bones in the wrist and the second most commonly fractured carpal. A sudden, direct impact is the most common cause, resulting in wrist pain on the little finger side.

What does the triquetrum bone do?

Functions: What does the Triquetrum Bone Do

Its primary function is to shape up and maintain the flexibility of human wrists along with the other carpal bones.

Can fractures heal without cast?

Technically speaking, the answer to the question “can broken bones heal without a cast?” is yes. Assuming conditions are just right, a broken bone can heal without a cast. However, (and very importantly) it doesn’t work in all cases. Likewise, a broken bone left to heal without a cast may heal improperly.

Can you dislocate triquetrum?

In contrast to triquetral fractures, dislocations of the triquetrum are very uncommon because of the very strong ligamentous support. They occasionally occur in association with complex wrist injuries, isolated dislocations however are extremely rare.

Does the triquetrum articulate with the ulna?

Triquetrum — The triquetrum bone in the proximal row of carpal bones is roughly triangular when viewed from the posterior. It lies between the lunate and pisiform bones. Although it is very near the ulna, it does not articulate with it.

What is avulsion of triquetrum?

Triquetral fractures are frequently caused by impaction of the ulnar wrist after a fall on an outstretched hand or by avulsion of attached ligaments. There are three main types of triquetral fractures: dorsal cortical fractures, triquetral body fractures, and volar cortical fractures.

Is triquetrum and triquetral the same?

The name triquetrum is derived from the Latin word triquetrus which means “three-cornered”. Sometimes it is also called triquetral bone, triangular bone or cuneiform bone.

How do you palpate a triquetrum?

The triquetrum can best be palpated by placing the wrist in radial deviation, finding the ulnar styloid, and palpating just distal to that. The first bony prominence encountered is the triquetrum (circled area).

Where is the triquetrum bone located?

The triquetral bone (/traɪˈkwɛtrəl, -ˈkwiː-/; also called triquetrum, pyramidal, three-faced, and formerly cuneiform bone) is located in the wrist on the medial side of the proximal row of the carpus between the lunate and pisiform bones. It is on the ulnar side of the hand, but does not articulate with the ulna.

How do I know if I broke my pisiform?

This injury presents as chronic wrist pain, grip weakness, and/or restriction of wrist movements. Pisiform fractures may also be associated with tenderness in the affected area. Most pisiform fractures are a result of falling onto an outstretched hand (FOOSH injuries).

What happens if a fracture is left untreated?

When a bone fracture is untreated, it can result in either a nonunion or a delayed union. In the former case, the bone doesn’t heal at all, which means that it will remain broken. As a result, swelling, tenderness, and pain will continue to worsen over time.
