In conversation, the ‘night’ of which ‘midnight’ is in the middle, is considered the night of the date mentioned. If you are referring to a deadline, this also will refer to the stroke of 12 after the evening of the same date. Example: The paper is due by Friday at midnight.
Does midnight mean the start or end of the day?
Though there is no global unanimity on the issue, most often midnight is considered the start of a new day and is associated with the hour 00:00. Even in locales with this technical resolution, however, vernacular references to midnight as the end of any given day may be common.
What does Monday at midnight mean?
It is often said that 12am Monday is midnight on Monday morning and 12pm is midday. Times in the first hour of the day are sometimes given as, for example, 00:47 am, with 00:00 am corresponding to midnight, but with a time twelve hours later given as 12:47 pm.
Each suceeding day therefore ends at midnight 12:00:00. The next day begins a nanosecond after midnight. So, it seems most accurate to say that each day ends at midnight, and the next day starts “immediately after midnight.”
