Plant rock purslane in full sunlight. If your climate has hot summers, these plants will appreciate a little afternoon shade. Rock purslane can grow in nearly any type of soil, but it must be well drained. Gritty or sandy soil is excellent.
Is rock purslane a succulent?
Native to Chile, Rock purslane belongs to a small group of succulents with colorful flowers and a tolerance for arid conditions. It is the only species commonly found in cultivation in California where it is a popular accent plant in rock gardens and among other succulents.

Performs best in full sun to part shade, in well-drained soils with occasional irrigation. Drought tolerant once established. Withhold water during winter dormancy. Rock Purslane is hardy to USDA 9 – 11 and grown as an annual in cooler areas.
How long does rock purslane bloom?
Flowering. I don’t know of another succulent that blooms as long as this one does. In Northern California, it produces fuchsia pink-purple blooms continuously from about April through much of fall, and in warm, frost-free areas like Southern California, it blooms nearly year-round.
How fast does rock purslane grow?
The Calandrinia should be sown at a depth of 0.1” inches in the soil if you plan to plant it outdoors. Plant it after the last frost of spring to avoid freezing of roots. If you plant the Calandrinia in part shade, it will take around 8 weeks for it to start off before you need to put them out in full sun.
How do you get purslane to bloom?
If portulaca won’t bloom, it may be because the soil is too rich or too soggy. Although you can add sand or a small amount of compost to the soil, it may be easier to start over in a new location. (You can also plant moss roses in containers.
Can you eat rock purslane?
Is Purslane Edible? The leaves, stems, flowers, and seeds of the purslane plant are all edible, but I’ve only eaten the stems and leaves myself. They have a slightly sour edge (not as strong as wood sorrel) and a hint of a mucilaginous quality (not as strong as mallows). Purslane is terrific as part of a salad.
Is rock purslane poisonous?
Purslane contains soluble calcium oxalates. This property is what makes it toxic to your dog. Soluble oxalates are composed of potassium and sodium salts of oxalic acid. Once ingested, the oxalates are quickly absorbed by the gastrointestinal tract leading to symptoms of toxicity.

Bees are also attracted to Angelina stonecrop, propeller plant (Crassula falcata), and Mesembryanthemums. Butterflies enjoy many of the same plants that attract bees. They also swarm to rock purslane, sempervivum, blue chalk sticks, and other varieties of senecio.

Rock purslane quickly grows to about 1 foot tall by 4 feet wide, and creates a weed-suppressing dense mound sporting grey-green succulent foliage that’s topped by long thin stems sporting a continuous supply of bouncy magenta 1.5 ” poppy-like flowers.
