Cement Backer Board

Cement backer board is also called cement board, and it’s the most commonly used backer board for all manner of ceramic and porcelain tiles. Made of cement and reinforced on the top and bottom with fiberglass, this waterproof backer board is generally used for tiled shower surrounds and floors in wet areas.

What is cement backer board used for?

Cement backer board, also called a cementitious backer unit or CBU, is commonly used to form a base for ceramic tile. Because cement backer board is porous, thin-set, grout, and mortar adhere well to it. Backer boards can be nailed or screwed into studs or cinderblock, brick mortar, or concrete.

Can cement board be used instead of drywall?

While you can use cement board instead of drywall, it’s not always practical. For starters, cement board is 2-3 times the cost of drywall. It’s also harder to find cement boards in the larger 4 x 8′ sheets. Cement board does have its place, though, and is very useful for high moisture rooms.

As a building material, interior fibre cement tile backer board products are especially suited as a tiling base for tiling wet areas such as bathrooms, kitchens and showers as it is resistant to permanent water damage and does not need to be treated before tiling.

Do you have to tape cement board before tiling?

If you are going to tile over the cement board, you should tape the seams. This should not be that difficult. Pack in thinset, lay on the tape, and flat-knife to get it set in. In the corners, use a corner knife.
