Kock Pouch Ileostomy Overview
Most patients need a Kock pouch ileostomy procedure to help them eliminate waste (stool) after having part or all of their lower intestines removed through small bowel resection or colon resection surgery.
Is a Kock pouch permanent?
K-Pouch (also known as a Kock Pouch or Continent Ileostomy)
Most patients who cannot have a J- or S-pouch will have a permanent ileostomy bag. However, the Kock pouch, or K-pouch, is an alternative to a regular (end) ileostomy.
Who gets a Kock pouch?
Indications. Kock pouch ileostomy is indicated for patients who are unfit for ileal pouch anal anastomosis (IPAA) because the anus and anal sphincter will be removed during the operation; and patients who develop severe incontinence after IPAA. A Kock pouch need not be created during the initial colectomy surgery.
Where is the Kock pouch?
A Kock Pouch is created using your own intestines. After your colon is removed, a reservoir made from small intestine tissue. The reservoir is connected to your small intestine on one end and a stoma, or opening in the skin, on the other. The stoma is usually placed just above the pubic area.
Is colostomy and stoma the same?
A colostomy is an operation to divert 1 end of the colon (part of the bowel) through an opening in the tummy. The opening is called a stoma. A pouch can be placed over the stoma to collect your poo (stools). A colostomy can be permanent or temporary.
How often do you empty a Kock pouch?
You’ll probably need to empty the pouch four to six times per day and use irrigation two of these times. But anytime you feel full or bloated, drain the pouch.
How do you poop with AJ pouch?
This hole (stoma) allows waste to pass into an external (outside the body) bag called an ostomy bag while the J-pouch heals. Once the J-pouch heals, the surgeon closes the stoma and reattaches the two ends of the bowel. This connection enables the body to accumulate waste in the pouch and eliminate it through the anus.
