Armor-piercing fin-stabilized discarding sabot (APFSDS), long dart penetrator, or simply dart ammunition, is a type of kinetic energy penetrator ammunition used to attack modern vehicle armor.
The M829A3 round has a total mass of 22.3 kg (49 lb) and length of 892 mm (35.1 in).
Before the round is fired, the rear part of the penetrator is attached to a propellant case, and the front part is attached to the sabot structure. The sabot’s purpose is to keep the narrow penetrator centered in the wide gun barrel.
So instead of having some mind-boggling penetration (for an APFSDS fired with the short L/44 barrel) against all types of armor, the penetration against RHS/composite armor might be as low as ~660 to 700 mm; enough to defeat the main armor of tanks like the T-80U, T-90 and Type 99.
Thus, a round of 120 mm Rheinmetall APFSDS ammunition has a mass of 19.8 kg, which is little more than the 18 kg mass of a typical 105 mm APFSDS round with the traditional metallic cartridge case.
Modern APFSDS rarely ever deflect – it requires an impact angle of less than about 15° (or more than 85°, if measured from the surface normal) to have a decent chance for a deflection.
Sabot in Action
According to a soldier in the American Heroes Channel, “when it hits the (target), it creates such force that it bores a hole through it… it liquefies everything inside. You can technically come in with a hose and hose out the enemy tank crew; it annihilates human matter.”
Types of SLAP ammunition
Abandoned. Intended for the M60 machine gun, but caused catastrophic barrel failures when tested. Penetration was also subpar.
Developments in tank armor soon made tanks generally impervious to 50 caliber rounds,39 but according to the Marine Corps and other authorities, the 50 caliber can still blast through more lightly armored vehicles, such as armored personnel carriers, and thus clearly through armored limousines.
When the round is fired and exits the barrel, the shoe flies off, and the round is on its way. The long-rod penetrator then flies downrange towards the target. Once it hits, the round just punches through the armor. The result is the enemy tank tends to blow up in what tankers call a “Jack in the box.”
The Sabot is a non-explosive tank round that consists of a narrow metal rod made of depleted uranium that penetrates armor then explodes into a spray of metal fragments.
The smoothbore design of most modern tank barrels makes it easier for tanks to fire missiles through the same barrel used to fire projectiles. The gun itself is not the sole factor influencing the range of a tank during combat operations.
Function. HESH rounds are thin metal shells filled with inert material (like coal-tar pitch), plastic explosive and a delayed-action base fuze. Upon impacting, the inert material followed by plastic explosive is “squashed” against the surface of the target and spreads out to form a disc or “pat” of explosive.
