Like many insects, carpenter bees hate the smell of citrus oil. And because of this, it serves as the perfect natural repellent for stopping carpenter bees. Citrus oil is a natural repellent for many insects, including carpenter bees.
Non-toxic liquids that repel bees include solutions of water with citrus oil or almond oil. Use a spray bottle to apply around the bee holes to encourage the bees to leave the nest. Loud noises and vibrations are known to repel bees, so play loud music with the speakers next to the area of infestation for 2-3 days.
Boric Acid.
This common household item can be used for a bevy of different DIY insect-removal projects. Mix 3 parts water with 1 part boric acid in a spray bottle and spray inside the entrance hole. This is very poisonous to the carpenter bees and will exterminate them within an hour.
Carpenter bees usually live for about one year. Each new generation is hatched in the late summer, emerging from nests in August and September to grow and feed, pollinating flowers as they go before settling in for the winter and hibernating.
So when it gets dark, they return to their holes to get some rest. According to The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, you’ll often find female carpenter bees resting in their burrows at night, especially when they’re still in the middle of constructing the tunnels inside.
Carpenter bees do not bite. The female does have a stinger but will only sting if directly handled; the female is not generally aggressive.

Carpenter bees hate the scent and it will keep them from nesting on sprayed wood. Some people have also had luck spraying new nest openings with almond oil to get existing carpenter bees to leave. Mix the almond oil with water to spray on wood, or apply the oil directly to carpenter bee nest holes.
For a natural solution that deters rather than kills them – our preferred route – use citrus scents, which they dislike to get rid of them. To make your own, boil up citrus fruit rinds in water, or add some drops of citrus oil to water, and spray around the tell-tale holes. Alternatively, try a few drops of almond oil.
Generally preferring wood that is either unpainted or weathered, the female carpenter bee will return to the same nesting site year after year.
