Genie 2 is designed to be the one-size-fits-most solution. You can have up to seven rooms of TV going at one time using only client boxes, and three of those can be 4K at the same time. That’s probably enough for over 99% of people.
Is the Genie 2 any good?
The Genie 2 has stronger stats (450 hours, seven tuners) and exclusively wireless connectivity—so no cable clutter. It’s clearly superior to the original; we recommend it for most users. But we actually prefer the DISH Hopper 3 to the DIRECTV Genies.

Place your new Genie 2 next to your old equipment and transfer all cables and cords one at a time, connecting the power cord last. Plug the power cord into an electrical outlet. Power on your TV. Wait 3-4 minutes for the ADD CLIENT button at the top of your Genie 2 to start flashing green.
Will DIRECTV upgrade my receiver for free?
Yes, the replacement is free. You have old receivers that will no longer be able to receive programming if you don’t get the replacements. Just make sure you get the free replacements because it is possible to upgrade which would come with a service commitment.
Does DIRECTV require a box for each TV?
Directv (satellite) requires receiving dish and a receiver box authorizing each tv. This service cannot use an app to stream from internet to tv as that is not how the service is delivered.

The Genie 2 supports 7 clients, of which 2 can be showing 4K at any time. However, you can’t choose to use regular receivers. They simply can’t be added to your account.
Can you own your own DIRECTV receiver?
Yes, you can buy a new receiver and buy a new card for it (something like $20). Beware of buying receivers on ebay and anywhere. Most people lease receivers and don’t have the rights to sell them. DIRECTV will not activate a card for a leased box that is not with the original customer.
