How to Apply Gold Leaf

Gold leafing calls for a water based adhesive. You can buy metal leaf adhesive specifically for gilding. I have seen people use Mod Podge as well. You will also need gilding brushes.

How do you stick gold leaf?

APPLYING ADHESIVE – I brush on a water-based adhesive when gilding over acrylic. If gilding over oil paints, you really need to make sure the paint is dry through and this can take several months! If you gild over oil paints that are not thoroughly dry, the leaf can adhere to areas where you don’t want it to be.

Can I use Elmer’s glue for gold leaf?

I let it dry for the most part and then began to apply my gold leaf. I just painted on Elmers glue where I wanted to add the leaf and then gently set the sheets down. I used a small brush to add and remove pieces and then brushed some glue around the edges where the leaf was lifting up. I then began to add paint.
