Double Tap Breaker

Double Tap Breaker

Double tapped breakers are an unsafe condition in which multiple conductors are placed under the set screw of a single breaker. When multiple wires are connected to a breaker, you greatly increase the risk of a loose connection, which can lead to overheating, arcing, and electrical fires.

What breakers allow double tap?

Square D and Cutler Hammer both manufacture breakers that are rated to accept two wires (double taps).

Why would you double tap a breaker?

A double tapped breaker is basically two wires under one circuit breaker that is designed for one wire. You can see what this looks like in the picture above. The issue with double tapping is you could technically have a loose connection or an overloaded breaker since the breaker is not designed for two wires.

Are tandem breakers legal?

Tandem breakers are safe and legal to use only when the panel is designed for them and only in the slots that accept tandem breakers.

How much does it cost to fix double tapping?

A double-tapped breaker costs about $150-$250 to fix. Double-taps are a common defect in an inspection report, but it is easy to correct.

Can you double tap a 2 pole breaker?

When it’s NOT a defect: Double tapped wiring is ok if the circuit breaker is designed for two conductors. If a circuit breaker is designed for two conductors, it will say so right on the circuit breaker, and the terminal of the circuit breaker will be designed to hold two conductors in place.

What does double taps mean?

What Is a double tap? If your home has a double tapped circuit breaker, this means that two wires (conductors) are connected to one specific circuit breaker or one terminal on the same circuit breaker. You may also hear this condition referred to as a “double lug.”

Is Double lugging against code?

Double lugged neutrals are a defect, were never up to code, and should be corrected. The good news is that it should take an electrician about 1 minute to fix it!

How do you fix double tapped neutrals?

A licensed electrician will be able to fix your neutral wires if they are double tapped by moving them around and fitting them correctly. If there aren’t enough holes/fittings for the amount of neutral wires, a licensed electrician will install a new neutral bus bar to fit them in correctly.

Are tandem breakers a code violation?

No, it’s not. The use of tandem circuit breakers is a perfectly acceptable practice, as long as the panelboard is designed for tandem circuit breakers and they’re installed in locations within the panelboard where they’re allowed.

How many tandem breakers are allowed in a 100 amp panel?

Based on this formula, the maximum number of circuits allowed in a 100-amp 120/240-volt panelboard is 20.

Can I use one side of a double pole breaker?

A double pole switch can be used to control light and a fan or 2 lights on separate circuits. It is easy to wire a double pole switch to work as a single pole switch because only one side is used instead of both. Single pole switch is referred as a single pole, single throw switch.
