EPS (expanded polystyrene) and STYROFOAM™ Brand Foam can both be used for carving or sculpting. Each has their own unique properties that may be advantageous for a particular project. STYROFOAM™ Brand Foam is available in sheets ranging from ¾” thick to 4” thick in widths up to 48” and lengths of 96”.

Can you carve insulation foam?

It’s density makes it easy to sand down to a smooth texture, as opposed to styrofoam or other less dense foams that will break and crumble. Insulation foam will always hold the shape you carved into it. Insulation foam can be carved using a heat source, like a soldering iron.

What is blue foam used for?

Blue Foam. Also sold as buoyancy billet, blue foam is a closed-cell extruded polystyrene foam normally used for constructing floating structures. As a prototyping material, blue foam is an easily shapable rigid foam useful for exploring complex shapes and forms.

Can you sculpt Styrofoam?

For extruded polystyrene such as the blue foam board insulation, you can cut it well with any sharp blade. Often it isn’t even necessary to cut all the way through, you can simply score it and then snap along the scored line.

How do you carve foam sheets?

As before, the best way to cut foam board involves cutting at as much of an angle as possible, and you should also avoid sawing at the foam board. You should also use an extra-long blade for this. Doing so will make sure that the knife can reach all the way through at the angle you are cutting at with length to spare.

Can spray foam be carved?

You have to wait some hours until the foam gets dry and you are able to carve it. If you spray a bit water at the foam then this process will be accelerate. When it’s finally dry you can go to work.

How do you harden craft foam?

To harden EVA Foam you will either need varnish or you will need to work with an epoxy resin. Varnish is normally used to seal wood. It drys rigid and transparent.
