Hardie® Backer cement board is a tile underlayment made to use on walls, with floors and countertops. What’s the difference between cement board and Hardibacker?
HardieBacker is much more light, and it is also the best selling brand of cement board available. It is much cleaner because it does not have any glass in it. It allows for a smooth job with minimal mess. As a bonus, HardieBacker board has an EZ Grid pattern so you can cut perfect lines.

What is the difference between Hardibacker and durock?
It is far heavier and more difficult to cut. Durock is also more abrasive than HardieBacker. It can damage delicate materials such as vinyl, porcelain, and enamel. In fact, the official Durock warranty officially does not cover usage with vinyl tile as that can damage both the cement boards and the tiles.
Can I paint cement backer board?
Can You Paint On Backing Board? It is recommended not to paint cement boards unless they have been thoroughly cleaned, or if they have adhesion problems. The pores in fibrous cement boards, unlike standard cement, absorb the adhesives within the paint, making the finish much more durable than that of standard cement.

Is Hardibacker good for shower walls?
1/4″ hardibacker alone is an unsuitable substrate for shower wall tile. If it were attached to properly waterproofed drywall, plywood, or plaster it would be fine. Think about it, one wayward elbow, knee, or hip bump and you may get flexion which would cause the grout (or tile) to crack.
Can I use Hardibacker outside?

Can you use cement board as a subfloor instead of plywood?
Cement backerboard is more stable than plywood in high humidity and other wet environments. It won’t swell and buckle the way that plywood does, so it’s safe to use in mudrooms and bathrooms where things like spills and puddles are normal, as well as in areas with high levels of moisture in the air.
Can you tile straight onto HardiBacker?
The Hardibacker will be fine to tile straight onto.
Do I need to seal cement board before tiling?
Although most backerboards currently available won’t fall apart when exposed to moisture and are somewhat water-resistant, they aren’t waterproof. To prevent moisture from seeping through to the wood or metal studs beneath the tile, a barrier or sealant must be used on porous materials.
Do you need to use Redgard over cement board?
Grout is porous, sealing it won’t protect you. Also, You need one vapor barrier either behind it or over it. Redguard would be an over it application.
What is the difference between Hardie board and Hardie plank?
