Superior Colliculus Function

Superior Colliculus Function

The colliculus as a whole is thought to help orient the head and eyes toward something seen and heard. The superior colliculus also receives auditory information from the inferior colliculus. This auditory information is integrated with the visual information already present to produce the ventriloquism effect.

What happens if the superior colliculus is damaged?

Lesion of the LEFT superior colliculus results in inability to turn head reflexively to the RIGHT (CONTRA.) upon visual (or somatosensory and auditory) stimuli on the RIGHT. Other Note: Superior colliculus is also involved in the control of eye movements.

What is the function of the inferior colliculus?

Almost all ascending and descending auditory pathways between the brain stem and forebrain synapse within the inferior colliculus. Principal functions of the inferior colliculus involve sound localization, frequency determination, and integration of auditory with nonauditory systems.

What is the Tectospinal tract?

The tectospinal tract is part of the extrapyramidal system of the long descending motor pathway.[1] It is involved in orienting the eyes and the head towards sounds as part of the auditory and visual reflex.[2] It originates from the superior colliculus, which is involved in both the auditory and visual pathways.

What are the cerebellum’s functions?

The cerebellum (which is Latin for “little brain”) is a major structure of the hindbrain that is located near the brainstem. This part of the brain is responsible for coordinating voluntary movements. It is also responsible for a number of functions including motor skills such as balance, coordination, and posture.

Where does the superior colliculus project to?

The superior colliculus is on the posterior midbrain, rostral to the inferior colliculus, and caudal to the pineal gland. It has seven internal cell layers, divided into superficial, intermediate, and deep layers. The superficial layers consist of stratum zonale, stratum griseum superficiale, and stratum opticum.

Which sensory information is not routed through the thalamus on its way to the cerebrum?

The only sensory information that is not relayed by the thalamus into the cerebral cortex is information related to smell (olfaction).

What does the pulvinar nucleus do?

The pulvinar is a prototypic association nucleus that participates in reciprocal cortico-cortical interactions and promotes synchronized oscillatory activity in functionally related areas of the cortex.

What do the superior and inferior colliculi form?

The inferior colliculi together with the superior colliculi form the eminences of the corpora quadrigemina, and also part of the tectal region of the midbrain.

What is inferior colliculus and superior colliculus?

There are two superior colliculi in the midbrain. They are symmetrically positioned, one on either side of the midline of the brainstem; they form two bumps on the posterior external surface of the brainstem. The superior colliculi are just below the thalamus and above the two inferior colliculi.

What is superior olivary nucleus?

The superior olivary complex (SOC) is a group of auditory nuclei in the brainstem of amphibians, reptiles, and mammals. One major function of the SOC is to encode the cues that contribute to sound lateralization on the basis of convergent binaural ascending inputs arising from both ventral cochlear nuclei.

Where does the tectospinal tract terminate?

The tract descends to the cervical spinal cord to terminate in Rexed laminae VI, VII, and VIII to coordinate head, neck, and eye movements, primarily in response to visual stimuli.

Is tectospinal voluntary?

These are responsible for voluntary movement of the human body. Meanwhile, the extrapyramidal system consists of numerous tracts that descend from various cerebral cortex or brainstem structures. These are the rubrospinal, vestibulospinal, reticulospinal and tectospinal.

Is tectospinal an indirect pathway?

The tectospinal tract is a nerve pathway that coordinates head and eye movements. This neural tract is part of the indirect extrapyramidal tract. To be specific, the tectospinal tract connects the midbrain tectum and the spinal cord.
