It takes about 4 weeks for clover seed to mature after pollination. To encourage flowering and local adaptation of the clover and other species through in situ seed production and natural selection, one can stop mowing for 4-6 weeks in mid-summer on part or all of the lawn.
Does clover have to be replanted every year?
Clover species can be either annuals or perennials. Once established, perennial clover comes back reliably, making it more suitable as a ground cover than annual species that usually need reseeding each year. Perennial clover will self-seed too, but it spreads consistently through its creeping root system.
Can I just throw clover seed on the ground?
You can plant clover by itself for ground cover, but it stands up better to foot traffic when combined with lawn grass. Only 5 to 10% by weight of tiny clover seed needs to be mixed with the recommended amount of grass seed to create a thick stand.
Will clover take over grass?
Clover can take over areas of your lawn where grass is thinning or has turned brown. The fix: Regularly aerating your lawn loosens your soil and gives grass roots room to breathe and nutrients to thrive. With grass growing strong, there won’t be bare spots for clover to infiltrate.

Is red clover better than white clover?
White clover is considered best for grazing, while red clover is considered best for pasture and wildlife habitat, as it can quickly be depleted if grazed continuously. Both are considered helpful in improving and nitrogen-fixing the soil.
How do you encourage clover to spread?
Mix your clover seed with sand, sawdust, or fine soil to make spreading easier. Use a broadcast spreader (if you can find one that accommodates clover) for large areas to ensure even distribution. Do not fertilize. Follow with grass seed if using.
Is clover better than grass?
Clover also tolerates compacted soil better than lawn grasses. When it comes to weeds, diseases and pests, clover/grass lawns have the advantage as well. Clover can help out-compete weeds and is resistant to most diseases and pests, especially chinch bugs and white grubs.
Can I plant clover in winter?
Clover is ideal for a winter seeding, and is a forgiving crop. It’s shade tolerant and aggressive, growing low and thriving when interseeded, yet it works well on ground with less than ideal drainage.
Does clover choke other plants?
Clover fixes nitrogen from the air and releases it to the soil for other plants to use. Clover stays green for a longer season than grass. Clover is very persistent with an aggressive root structure, choking out most weeds.
