Resettable Fuse

Resettable Fuse

A resettable fuse or polymeric positive temperature coefficient device (PPTC) is a passive electronic component used to protect against overcurrent faults in electronic circuits. The device is also known as a multifuse or polyfuse or polyswitch.

Are there resettable fuses?

PTC Resettable Fuses are designed to stop current flow when it exceeds a certain limit (overcurrent protection). The Fuses work by increasing its resistance as its temperature rises due to the current increase.

What is hold current resettable fuse?

Hold current (IHOLD): Hold current is the maximum current the PTC fuse can sustain for long periods of time (4 hours or longer) at +23 °C without tripping.

Do PTC fuses fail?

When the current lies in-between the trip and the hold current, the fuse may trip or may not. Trip time is the time a PTC fuse needs to decrease the circuit current to hold at ambient temperature. A PTC resettable fuse degrades after a few trip-reset cycles.

How does a PolySwitch work?

The PolySwitch device is a series element in a circuit. The PPTC device protects the circuit by going from a low-resistance to a high-resistance state in response to an overcurrent condition, as shown in Figure 2. This is referred to as “tripping” the device.

How long does it take for a polyfuse to reset?

How long a polyfuse takes to “reset” if it has been tripped, I said about 24 hours.

Do resettable fuses have polarity?

Short: No. Thermal fuses are not polarised.

What does PTC fuse stand for?

A positive temperature coefficient (PTC) resettable fuse protects electronic devices in the event that excessive current or heat is generated. The devices generally increase the level of resistance at a specific threshold.

What is the use of thermal fuse?

A thermal fuse or thermal cutoff is a safety device which open circuits against overheat. It detects the heat caused by the over-current due to short circuit or component breakdown. Thermal fuses do not reset themselves when the temperature drops like a circuit breaker would.

Can you bypass a thermal fuse?

The thermal fuse will look like a thin strip of white plastic with a wire coming out of each end. In order to bypass the thermal fuse, use electrical tape to tape the two ends together. The thermal fuse will then be bypassed.

What causes a thermal fuse to fail?

A thermal fuse will blow when the temperature gets too high, not when it’s drawing too much current. When it blows, the dryer stops generating heat. It’s necessary to replace it before the dryer will run again. The thermal fuse is different from the thermal cutoff.

How do I choose a thermal fuse?

The thermal fuse is generally connected in series in the circuit when it is used. Therefore, when choosing a thermal fuse, its rated current must be greater than the current used in the circuit. Never allow the current through the thermal fuse to exceed the specified rated current.
