Lionel Train Transformer

Lionel Train Transformer

Keeping it simple: the 1033

The Lionel 1033 is a great choice for small or medium-sized layouts. All Lionel transformer comparisons should start here. For a classic setup of a single freight train running on a 4×8 (or smaller) sheet of plywood, a 90-watt Lionel 1033 or 1044 is an excellent choice.

What voltage do old Lionel trains use?

LIONEL Electric Trains operate on low voltage, usually 8 to 18 volts depending upon the locomotive and the number of cars used. Outfits with whistle require 3 or 4 volts more than outfits without whistle. Trainmaster Transformers reduce the house current (usually 115 volts) to the required low voltage.

Are old Lionel trains worth money?

Pre-war Lionel trains can sell anywhere from twenty dollars to several thousand dollars, depending on the rarity of the piece and its condition (among other factors).

Do Lionel trains run on AC or DC power?

Traditional Lionel trains from before 1969 can generally run on either AC or DC, but are better off running on AC. Some Lionel trains sold in discount stores in the 70s and 80s did run on DC, as a cost reduction measure.

How many watts does a Lionel train use?

The Powerhouse provides 180 Watts of power for your TMCC or LEGACY controlled layout. This is purely a power supply. (There is no means of controlling the trains directly from the Powerhouse.)

How do you test a Lionel train transformer?

Turn on the throttle, then short the A and U posts (in the case of Lionel) or variable and base posts (in the case of Flyer) with a screwdriver or a piece of wire for a maximum of five seconds. The circuit breaker should trip with a click and the transformer should go dead.

Are Lionel O Gauge trains AC or DC?

Nearly all O Gauge trains use Alternating Current (AC) electricity to operate. Direct Current (DC) is far more common in two-rail trains.

Are model train transformers AC or DC?

Alternating current (AC) is the preferred power for most O Gauge three-rail trains as well as some two-rail systems in smaller scales. In three-rail systems, the outer rails are both grounded, and the center rail is “hot.” Most two-rail track systems use direct current (DC).

Can Lionel run DC?

Lionel trains used an open-frame motor that could run on either AC or DC power.

How much is a 1958 Lionel train worth?

$75-125 (represents a fair-market value for auction purposes; retail or asking prices may vary).

How much is a 1935 Lionel train set worth?

These are not rare cars, but this is a great engine. And the whole set together would easily bring $2,500 to $3,000 at auction.

Why do Lionel trains have 3 rails?

Lionel used the center rail for power and the two outer rails for ground. This made complex track setups very simple using the technology of the day. For example, with a three-rail system, the track can loop back on itself without any issues.

What voltage do O gauge trains use?

The three-rail O gauge toy trains sold in the United States are intended to run on approximately 5 to 20 volts of 60-cycle alternating current (AC).

How are Lionel trains powered?

A Lionel train is just a flow of electrons. The hot wire from your electrical box goes through a transformer to the center rail, then through the motor and out to the wheels, through the outer rails and back to the transformer and finally, back to the outlet and out of your house back through the panel.

How much power does a train use?

The Class 170 train is a 100 mph train with a 315 kW engine in each car. In the thirty-six seconds, it would take to cover a mile at 100 mph, a Class 170 train would use 315/100 or 3.15 kWh per vehicle mile.
