Working Set

Working Set

The working set of a process is the set of pages in the virtual address space of the process that are currently resident in physical memory.

What is the importance of the working set?

The working set is a dynamic subset of a process’s address space that must be loaded in main memory to ensure acceptable processing efficiency. In the early days of computing, this intuitive idea enabled programmers to plan their memory usage over time in a constrained main memory.

What is working set policy?

The idea of the working set policy is to ensure that each process keeps its working set in memory. Allocate |w(t,k)| frames to each process. This number differs for each process and changes with time. On a fault, evict a page not in the working set. But it is not easy to find such a page quickly.

What is the difference between resident set and a working set?

What is the resident set and working set of a process? Resident set is that portion of the process image that is actually in real-memory at a particular instant. Working set is that subset of resident set that is actually needed for execution.

What is a working set model in OS?

Definition: Working set model is a dynamic page replacement algorithm that allocates frames to a particular process assuming that the nearest future of pages will be used is a closed approximation of the recent past pages in memory. This model uses a parameter ∆ to define the working-set window.

What is the difference between commit and working set memory?

So you can think of the working set as the amount of physical memory used, while the commit size indicates the amount of virtual memory used (sans things like DLLs or memory mapped files, which can be back by files other than the page file).

What is the working set size of a process?

The Working Set Size (WSS) is how much memory an application needs to keep working. Your application may have 100 Gbytes of main memory allocated and page mapped, but it is only touching 50 Mbytes each second to do its job. That’s the working set size: the “hot” memory that is frequently used.

Can a process have 2 working sets?

Yes, in fact many processors provide two TLBs for this very reason. As an example, the code being accessed by a process may retain the same working set for a long period of time.

What thrashing means?

Thrashing occurs when there are too many pages in memory, and each page refers to another page. The real memory shortens in capacity to have all the pages in it, so it uses ‘virtual memory’.

What is the resident set?

In computing, resident set size (RSS) is the portion of memory occupied by a process that is held in main memory (RAM). The rest of the occupied memory exists in the swap space or file system, either because some parts of the occupied memory were paged out, or because some parts of the executable were never loaded.

What is working set quizlet?

The set of pages in the most recent t page references is the working set (Figure 9.20). If a page is in active use, it will be in the working set.

What is the difference between demand cleaning and precleaning?

With demand cleaning, a page is written out to secondary memory only when it has been selected for replacement. A pre-cleaning policy writes modified pages before their page frames are needed so that pages can be written out in batches.

How working set model is related with thrashing?

Working Set Model –

The basic principle states that if we allocate enough frames to a process to accommodate its current locality, it will only fault whenever it moves to some new locality. But if the allocated frames are lesser than the size of the current locality, the process is bound to thrash.
