Installing Toilet Flange

Installing Toilet Flange

The toilet flange needs to be on top of the finished floor. Meaning the bottom edge of the flange needs to be on the same plane as the toilet. So if your toilet sits on the tile, the flange needs to be on top of the tile too.

Do you glue toilet flange to pipe?

If the pipe has a 4-inch inside diameter:

Buy an inside closet flange. This toilet flange is designed to glue on the inside of the pipe or expand inside the pipe. Leave the old toilet flange right in place and glue on the new one at the right elevation for the floor, if it’s plastic.

Can a toilet flange be too high?

When your toilet flange is too high, your toilet may leak water and rock back and forth when used. Both the leaking and the rocking can warp or break the floor. A leaking flange can also rot the subfloor and lead to the accumulation of mildew and mold.

Does toilet flange need to be screwed down?

Does a toilet flange need to be screwed or bolted to the floor? Yes, you have to screw or bolt the toilet flange to the floor. If you do not, you risk not securing the toilet enough to prevent rocking that may damage the wax seal, the drainage pipe, or the floor.

What height should a toilet flange be?

Check the Flange Height

With the toilet removed, you can see the toilet flange and measure its height above the floor. The optimum flange height to aim for is 1/4 inch above the finished floor. This typically allows for almost any type of wax ring to be used and still ensure a good seal.

Can toilet flange be flush with tile?

Toilet bowls are designed to be secured to the toilet flange with a wax ring. The wax ring seals and connects the flange to the lower level piping. Placing the flange below the tiles or flush with the floor can cause drainage complications.

Can you put 2 wax rings on a toilet?

You can certainly install a toilet with multiple wax rings, in fact sometimes it is necessary to make sure you don’t have a leak. The most common case is when a homeowner will install a tile floor (or really any thick floor).

Does a cracked toilet flange have to be replaced?

Although rather common, a damaged toilet flange must be repaired as soon as possible to prevent leaks that could cause serious damage to your flooring or tile. A broken flange will cause the toilet to move because it is no longer secured to the flange, which is anchored to the subfloor.

Can you put a new toilet flange over an old one?

A second option is to use a closet flange repair kit. It’s a great option if your existing closet flange is broken or rusted. Due to its construction you can only use a toilet flange repair ring on PVC or ABS pipes.

Does a toilet need to be perfectly level?

Most toilets commonly found in the home can function even if they are not level. However, if a toilet is not level and rocking side to side or back and forth, it can quickly cause damage to the wax seal and flange, leading to leaks. It is best to ensure that a toilet is level when it is installed.

Can toilet flange be lower than floor?

In a typical toilet installation, the floor flange that sits inside the drain opening below the toilet should be positioned so that its bottom surface rests flush against the finished floor or no more than 1/4 inch above or below the floor.
