Causes of Volvulus

Volvulus of the colon and lower bowel typically occurs in adults, and may be the result of constipation, redundant intestinal tissue, adhesions (particularly after surgery has been performed), or abnormal intestinal contents.

Can volvulus be cured?

Surgery is an option to treat volvulus and stop the intestine from twisting again. Types of surgeries for twisted bowel include: Colectomy: This is a surgery that removes all or part of your colon. For a twist in the lower colon, your doctor will take out the affected part of your intestine.

Is volvulus a medical emergency?

Sigmoid volvulus is considered a medical emergency and should prompt immediate treatment. If the colon is twisted and the blood supply is intact, then a colonoscopy may be performed to untwist the colon.

How long can you live with a twisted bowel?

Without any fluids (either as sips, ice chips or intravenously) people with a complete bowel obstruction most often survive a week or two. Sometimes it’s only a few days, sometimes as long as three weeks. With fluids, survival time may be extended by a few weeks or even a month or two.

Who is at risk for volvulus?

Colonic volvulus is most common in adults between the ages of 50 and 80. Sigmoid volvulus is more common in men, while cecal volvulus is more common in women.

How do you fix volvulus?

A volvulus needs prompt treatment and usually requires surgery. During surgery to correct a volvulus, a doctor will make a small incision in the abdominal wall near the site of the twisted part of the intestine and untwist it. Afterward, the doctor will restore blood flow to the areas affected by the volvulus.

Can you pass gas with a volvulus?

Is volvulus genetic?

Intestinal malrotation is a potentially life-threatening congenital anomaly due to the risk of developing midgut volvulus. The reported incidence is 0.2%–1% and both apparently hereditary and sporadic cases have been reported.
