Foil Faced Insulation

Foil Faced Insulation

Foil faced insulation is the best type of insulation for retaining heat in the winter and keeping heat out in the summer. This insulation product is designed to slow heat transfer and enhance acoustical performance. It also works as a barrier for methane, radon, vapor, termites and other vermin.

Which way do you face foil insulation?

If you’re wondering whether to put the foil side of foam insulation board shiny side in or out, consider whether you want to make the space inside warmer or cooler. If you want to make the space warmer, the foil should face inside so it can reflect radiant heat back into the room.

What is foil insulation used for?

Foil-faced batt insulation helps keep interior heat inside the living area when placed in the attic with the foil side down. This also helps prevent moisture migration to the attic through the batts.

What is foil faced?

Foil faced insulation, often referred to as reflective insulation, is an insulation material that has reflective foil on at least one side, typically made of aluminum or aluminized polyester. The foil layer reflects heat and prevents it from moving to the other side of the insulation material.

Do you need a vapor barrier with foil insulation?

Using a vapour-check or foil backed plasterboard as a VCL

Vapour control layers are always required whenever you insulate, irrespective of the insulation used.

Can I use foil-faced insulation on interior walls?

AP™ Foil-Faced insulation is lightweight and easy to install. It can be installed on the interior of a basement wall by either direct attachment or using wood furring strips. AP™ Foil-Faced insulation must be covered with an approved thermal barrier and cannot be left exposed.

Which side of foil board faces out?

Foilboard® GREEN rigid insulation panel should be installed to the external face of the studwork, with the anti-glare side is facing out.

Does it matter which way insulation faces?

Regardless of whether fiberglass insulation is installed in a wall, attic, or crawlspace; the paper facing should always face toward the inside of the home. That’s because the paper contains a layer of asphalt adhesive which prevents water vapor from passing through it.

Which side of insulation goes against the wall?

The first layer should have the facing against the drywall to act as a vapor barrier. (The general rule for insulation is that the facing always goes toward the conditioned space.) The second layer of insulation should be unfaced so that moisture doesn’t collect between the layers.

Does foil insulation cause condensation?

As well as reflecting and blocking radiant heat, radiant barriers and reflective foil insulation are also great at reducing condensation.

Does reflective insulation keep cold out?

Radiant Barriers (Reflective Insulation)

Reflective, radiant-barrier insulation is usually made of aluminum foil with a variety of different backings, including plastic film and cardboard. This type of insulation is most effective in warmer climates, but can also be used for comfort and energy savings in cold weather.

What is the R-value of foil insulation?

The R-value of 3/8-inch-thick foil-faced expanded polystyrene foam is about 1.6. By contrast, 2 inches of extruded polystyrene insulation has an R-value of 10.

Is foil insulation waterproof?

Serving as a fully waterproof vapour barrier and thermal insulation upgrading system, this foil insulation is utilised in walls, roofs, attics, ceilings and floors.

Where should vapor barrier be placed?

Vapor barriers are usually best installed on the side of the wall that experiences the hotter temperature and moister conditions: the inner surface in colder climates and the outer surface in hot, humid climates. In existing spaces, oil-based paints or vapor-barrier latex paints offer an effective moisture barrier.
