Knee Mill

Knee Mill

A knee mill is a type of vertical milling machine where instead of the entire table being stationary, it is able to move along the y, or vertical, axis, a direction in which the workpiece can move in relation to the milling tool shaping it.

What is the difference between a knee mill and a bed mill?

The main difference is that with a knee mill, the table moves up and down in Z, whereas with a Bed Mill it is the spindle that moves up and down. Note that Knee Mills also have what’s called a “Quill”.

What is the knee on Bridgeport mill?

A manual knee mill is a milling machine that has an x-y table that goes up and down the column on a knee that is vertically adjustable. These machines were the standard machine for milling back in the 1930’s when the Bridgeport mill was introduced in Connecticut.

What is knee-and-column milling?

Knee-and-column milling machines, also called variable-speed vertical milling machines, use rotary cutting tools to remove material from a workpiece. The cutting tools are held in a vertical orientation and the workpiece is secured in a horizontal orientation on the machine’s table.

Who invented the knee mill?

In 1936, Rudolph Bannow (1897–1962) conceived of a major improvement to the milling machine. [21] His company commenced manufacturing a new knee-and-column vertical mill in 1938.

Why is it called a knee mill?

The design of the knee mill goes back to 1936, when Rudolph Bannow’s company produced a knee-and-column vertical mill with a rotating turret and sliding-ram head. The mill became known by the company’s name—Bridgeport—which, like Kleenex, became the generic signifier for mills of similar design.

How do I identify a Bridgeport mill?

They are stamped on the main housing and also on a tag on the upper drive. These numbers are prefixed with the model of the head. The most common are “M”, “J”, “2J”.

What is milling and types of milling?

Milling is a process performed with a machine in which the cutters rotate to remove the material from the work piece present in the direction of the angle with the tool axis. With the help of the milling machines one can perform many operations and functions starting from small objects to large ones.

What does the Ram do on a milling machine?

Ram-Type and Universal Ram-Type Milling Machines

A ram-type machine is used to allow the tooling to position itself on a greater range of space with regards to the workpiece. The ram-type machine has a spindle on a movable housing, which can move within a set horizontal plane.

What is turret milling?

The turret milling machine is a specific type of milling machine that works vertically, and can be used to create a wide range of objects. It is thus considered the most adaptable type of milling machine out there.

What is groove milling?

Groove or slot milling is an operation in which side and face milling is often preferred to end milling. Slots or grooves can be short or long, closed or open, straight or non-straight, deep or shallow, wide or narrow. Tool selection is normally determined by the width and depth of the groove and, to some extent,

What is column milling?

Column and knee type milling machine:

It is the very common milling machine type. In this machine a vertical column is attached to the bed which consist all gear drives which rotate the knee and saddle. A knee is situated on the base which can provide vertical motion to the work piece or which can move up and down.
