Schluter Strip

The schluter strip are metal strips used with tile installations. Most commonly, the schluter strip is used to form the edge of a tile installation. This strip will give a square edge rather than a bullnose tile edge. They can be used as a decorative element within the tile pattern, as a border or divider.

Schluter®-Profiles protect tile edges from cracking and chipping, eliminate the need for caulking, and provide easy transitions between adjacent floor and wall coverings.

What is a Schluter used for?

Schluter ®-DITRA and DITRA-XL are specifically designed for ceramic and stone tile installations. DITRA and DITRA-XL provide uncoupling to prevent cracked tile and grout. Made of polyethylene, DITRA and DITRA-XL serve as a waterproofing layer that protects moisture-sensitive substrates, such as plywood/OSB.

Do you have to use Schluter?

What size Schluter do I need for 3/8 tile?

The height (thickness) of your tile dictates the size of the trim. The trim should be at or slightly lower than the edge of the tile once it is installed. For example a tile that is 3/8″ (10mm) thick should work with a 3/8″ trim.

Can Kerdi be installed over drywall?

Without a waterproof membrane like Kerdi, water and moisture can seep through grout, tile and other materials and end up damaging wood studs and subfloor.

Is DITRA better than Hardibacker?

Schulter Ditra or Cement Board (Hardibacker, Durock, Wonderboard, etc.) is typically used as a tile substrate because it is durable, water resistant, and does not expand, contract, or warp when exposed to moisture. Schluter Ditra is superior to cement board in all categories except price and durability.
