The Essex County Turtle Back Zoo is temporarily closing to the public effective March 14, 2020 following the lead and directive of our state health and government officials as a measure to help slow the spread of the novel coronavirus in our community.
Why is it called the Turtle Back Zoo?
Turtle Back Zoo opened June 3, 1963 with a collection of 140 animals of 40 species. The zoo took its name from a rock formation located on the mountainside just east of the zoo. The Lanape Indians called this formation Turtle Back Rock.
Can you ride on turtles at Turtle Back Zoo?
The giant tortoises can grow to be as much as 290 to 520 pounds. Aldabra tortoises were a popular attraction at Turtle Back until the 1990s, and visitors were allowed to ride on the backs of the tortoises. However, unlike in the past, no tortoise rides will be allowed.

Do you have to wear a mask at the Turtle Back Zoo?
Am I required to wear a facial covering? Face coverings are now optional while on Zoo Grounds.
Can you bring a dog to the Turtle Back Zoo?
Turtle Back Zoo is a smoke-free facility. Smoking permitted in designated areas only. Visitors age 17 and under must be accompanied by a chaperone. Pets are NOT permitted.
Does Turtle Back Zoo have giraffes?
Turtle Back Zoo is an accredited member of the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) and the giraffes are here as part of the AZA Species Survival Plan (SSP).
How old do you have to be to work at the Turtle Back Zoo?
Being a Docent requires you to:
be at least 18 years old.

Turtle Back Zoo is located at 560 Northfield Avenue in West Orange. Hours are 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily during the winter.

How many acres is Turtle Back Zoo?
Opened in 1963 on 1.5 acres, Turtle Back Zoo has since expanded to 40 acres in the 2,110-acre South Mountain Reservation that encompasses portions of West Orange, Millburn and Maplewood, and borders South Orange.
