IS 2473: Dimensions for centre holes.
What is deep hole method?
In the deep-hole method, a hole is first drilled through the thickness of the component. The diameter of the hole is accurately measured and then a core of material around the hole is trepanned out, relaxing the residual stresses in the core.
Why center drill is used?
A center drill is used for drilling a hole on the axis of a shaft to hold it between centers. It was also used to drill center holes on machining centers, but has been replaced by the spot drill (which has a simpler geometry) for this purpose.
What is the purpose of center drilling a hole?
Centre Drills (aka Slocombe Drills) were designed to provide a location for a Tailstock Centre (hence their 60deg point angle) but are commonly used to make a small starting indentation to guide further drilling in a Lathe.
What is L D ratio in drilling?
The L/D ratio is the ratio of the flighted length of the screw to its outside diameter. The ratio calculation is calculated by dividing the flighted length of the screw by its nominal diameter.
What type of drill is used for deep holes?
When drilling deep holes on a conventional CNC machine tool, there are three main options: a spade drill, a twist drill and a gundrill.
What is the angle of center drill?
Centerdrill countersink angles basically come in 3 angles: 60°, 82° and 90° included angles. A common angle used in live centers is 60°.
What is a Centre drill made of?
High-speed steel (HSS) is a form of tool steel; HSS bits are hard and much more resistant to heat than high-carbon steel. They can be used to drill metal, hardwood, and most other materials at greater cutting speeds than carbon-steel bits, and have largely replaced carbon steels.
What does SFM mean in drilling?
In terms of CNC operations, the acronym SFM stands for Surface Feet per Minute. But what does that mean? Well, it’s how quickly a cutting tool moves across the surface of a workpiece during a CNC machining operation cycle. For machinists, it’s an easily understood common denominator for describing tool head speed.
What is the difference between a center drill and a spot drill?
A spot drill does much the same as a center drill, but there are two differences. One is that the spot drill is thinner and does not have the conical ends that the center drill does. The second difference is it’s accuracy. The spot drill tends to be more precise in drilling a starting point.
What will happen if center drill is not used before starting a drill?
Without using a pre-center drill hole, the initial point of engagement is seated on the chisel edge. The cutter may therefore slip on the workpiece and consequently angular drill holes may be generated. In addition, tool break may be observed in the case of using brittle cutters (such as WC).
