If you wish to have a hard bound copy, a soft bound copy, an ePUB, a PDF, a MOBI, or even register a new version, you will need a unique ISBN for each version. This allows retailers to help the customer understand exactly which version of a title they are purchasing.

Do you need an ISBN for a digital book?

ISBNs are not necessary to sell ebooks; none of the top online retailers require them. Printed books, however, cannot be sold without an ISBN. Remember that each version of your book would need a separate ISBN, and purchasing a block of 10 would be more cost-effective than purchasing one.

Can a book have no ISBN?

Don't worry: if your book doesn't seem to have an ISBN, you can still sell it using BookScouter. The website features a handy search tool. Enter information about the book you've already researched—its title, author, and publication date —in the form provided. We can try to locate the ISBN for you.
