typically don't go away completely on their own, although they may shrink to an unnoticeable size and then grow again. Thus, a dermatologist's surgical intervention is needed to resolve the condition. Since epidermoid cysts aren't dangerous, they don't pose a health risk. Many are never treated.

Do cysts go bigger and smaller?

Cysts can range in size from smaller than a pea to a few centimetres across. They grow slowly. Skin cysts do not usually hurt, but can become tender, sore and red if they become infected. Foul-smelling pus coming out of the cyst is another sign of infection.

Can a cyst suddenly get bigger?

Cysts can remain stable or they may steadily grow. Sometimes they will become inflamed or suddenly break open (rupture).
