In Western culture, the significance of the red rose dates back to Greek mythology and the belief that the red rose was created by Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love. Legend has it that the flower grew from the ground watered with Aphrodite's tears and the blood of her ill-fated lover Adonis.

Roses were known to be a symbol of desire and secrecy in Roman mythology. Romans would reportedly put roses in their bedrooms to represent the love and beauty that Venus was known for. Their pleasant smelling fragrance graced many Romans' rooms and continued adding to the love and desire meaning behind roses.
