Chip bags are pressurised relative to the atmosphere. As the plane climbs, the pressure in the cabin drops, which increases the pressure difference. This pressure difference may exceed the strength of the bag, causing it to break. Why do Christians celebrate Easter for kids? why do we celebrate easter for kids.
Why do bags of chips explode in airplanes?
Why does a bag of chips explode when it’s on the aeroplane? It’s the pressure differential between the inside of the bottle and the ambient (cabin) air pressure. As the aircraft climbs after take-off the difference in pressures grows until the bag is no longer strong enough to maintain its’ integrity and it explodes.
Will my chips explode on a plane?
They don’t. While cargo is usually pressurized in a plane so this is less likely to happen, many a bag has popped open due to being in an unpressurized or not-fully-pressurized area. Also, because of this, most chips are shipped via ground, not air.
