How Cold Does R12 Get?
How Cold Does R12 Get?
David Miller••6 min read
From what I've read, R12 is colder. The A/C on my '69 Cadillac blows very cold. According to the shop manual, the air at the outlet vents is 45 degrees when set at maximum cool. R134 is more like 50-53 degrees.
.
In respect to this, is r12 colder than 134a?
In retro fitted systems, R12 is colder by a few degrees. If you use an updated condenser (most are) and a Sanden compressor, go R134a. New systems designed for R134a will freeze you out of the car. In retro fitted systems, R12 is colder by a few degrees.
Secondly, what happens if you mix r12 and r134a? The oils are different and not compatible and can cause an explosion. R134a is also a smaller molecule than r12 so if you HAD a small leak with r12 that you did not fix you have an even bigger leak now. R134a is so much smaller than r12 that it will leak right through the older hoses used for r12.
Likewise, how cold does refrigerant get?
The refrigerant is a special fluid that changes between liquid and vapor at convenient temperatures for pulling heat out of air that's at about 75° F and dumping it into air that's above 90° F.
Using the R134A prevented the damage to the ozone layer. The R134A is now commonly used in the air conditioning systems in vehicles, but it can also be used in fridges, freezers and other coolers similar to the applications of the R12.
This is because R134a doesn't cool as well and needs a larger area to dissipate heat and is charged to higher pressures. That said, the oils used by R12 and by R134a are different and not compatible. If mixed, they form an acidic sludge that is bad for the system.
