Are Galaxies Important?
Chloe Bennett••6 min read
Galaxies are agglomerations of stars, resulting in localised higher star densities than would be the case if stars were spread evenly throughout space. So galaxies are important to astrologers and early astronomers, because they allow imaginary shapes to be drawn between stars (constellations).
.
Also to know is, why are galaxies so important?
Galaxies show us how the matter in the universe is organized on large scales. In order to understand the nature and history of the universe, scientists study how the matter is currently organized and how that organization has changed through out cosmic time.
Also Know, why is the Milky Way galaxy important? The Milky Way allows to look in great detail at the workings of a moderate sized spiral galaxy. It is the foundation for our understanding of what goes on inside galaxies, much as the sun is the foundation of our entire understanding of stars.
Regarding this, what defines a galaxy?
A galaxy is a huge collection of gas, dust, and billions of stars and their solar systems. A galaxy is held together by gravity. Our galaxy, the Milky Way, also has a supermassive black hole in the middle. Some scientists think there could be as many as one hundred billion galaxies in the universe.
According to the current understanding of physics, an object within space-time cannot exceed the speed of light, which means an attempt to travel to any other galaxy would be a journey of millions of earth years via conventional flight.
Composition. The Universe is composed almost completely of dark energy, dark matter, and ordinary matter. Other contents are electromagnetic radiation (estimated to constitute from 0.005% to close to 0.01% of the total mass-energy of the Universe) and antimatter.
