Do You Mow Sod

Do You Mow Sod

How soon do you mow new sod? Your new sod can be mowed when it looks like it needs mowing (approximately 1 week after installation). When possible, use a walk-behind power mower, with the cutting height set high (3 inches). Do not use a riding mower as it is too heavy and its powered wheels can tear up the new sod.

What happens if you don't mow new sod?

If you wait until the grass is long to mow your lawn, the extra long grass clippings will clump up over the turf, blocking the sunlight and stunting growth. If left without raking, the clumped clippings could actually kill the grass.

Does mowing sod help it grow?

The timing and method you use for mowing affects the sod growth, both for new and established sod. The ideal height for most grass during the summer months is between 2 1/2 and 3 inches. The first time you mow the sod, wait until it reaches around 3 to 4 inches.
