What Does Engine Drone Mean

Last Updated October 21, 2021 | C.J. Tragakis. Exhaust drone is an annoying, monotone sound and vibration that occurs in some aftermarket exhaust systems. It’s usually caused when the frequencies of the engine and exhaust are aligned at a certain RPM (typically 2,000-3,500 RPM).

What causes engine drone?

A pressure wave creates the drone when the engine’s sound matches the exhaust note. This wave leads to vibration throughout the vehicle that, in turn, creates the exhaust drone we despise. This vibration affects more than just the exhaust system itself.

Does exhaust drone go away?

When the sound frequencies of the exhaust and engine match, a drone may occur. Altering the frequency of the exhaust will reduce or eliminate exhaust drone. Clamp weights to the exhaust pipes. Exhaust drone can be damped by increasing the density of the material through which the vibration must travel.
