While most of the structure of the deck is made of pressure-treated lumber and sometimes steel beams, the actual decking is the part you walk on. It can be made of wood, plastic (PVC) or a composite material that combines plastic with wood fibers.
Are decking boards treated?
The pressure treatment of softwood decking involves loading the packs of timber into a tank, prior to sealing it and filling with water and the preservative chemicals that are to impregnate the timber. Applying a vacuum pushes these preservatives deep into the timber (the amount used is tailored to the end use).

It’s then treated to protect against fungal decay and insect attack, ensuring that it will stay in good condition for longer.
