How Do You Spike a Tree

Tree spiking involves hammering a metal rod, nail or other material into a tree trunk, either inserting it at the base of the trunk where a logger might be expected to cut into the tree, or higher up where it would affect the sawmill later processing the wood.

When should I spike my tree?

The spikes dissolve gradually. In most situations you won’t have to worry about fertilizing your trees but twice a year. Use fertilizer spikes once in early spring and again in mid-fall when topsoil is moist, but not saturated. Fertilizer spikes are a lot easier to handle and store than bags of granular fertilizer.
