Plants generally need little pruning. If needed, prune immediately after flowering by cutting back flowering stems to a pair of healthy buds. Prune out weak or winter-damaged stems in late winter/early spring. Best to mulch plants year-round with 3″ of shredded bark, peat or compost.
Why are my hydrangea stems turning black?
Hydrangeas love water, but excessive irrigation or wet foliage injures plants. Insufficient water causes leaves to turn black or brown. Severe drought conditions cause entire plants to defoliate.
Should I cut off Brown hydrangea stems?
You’re safe! Removing deadwood is necessary only once a year – as winter draws to a close. Hydrangea macs and serratas stay in good shape most of the year, but winter, even the mildest of winters, seems to kill at least a few stems.
