What Is Front Light

What Is Front Light

Put simply, it is where your main source of light is coming from. If it’s in front of a subject, it’s called Front Light. If it’s behind, it’s called Backlight. For example, if you’re taking a portrait shot of someone with the sun coming from the background, that’s known as backlight.

What is the difference between front light and back light?

Backlighting is where you photograph your subject with the light source behind them. The light is back behind them. Front lighting is the opposite, where you are photographing your subject with the light shining directly on them. So the light source is actually behind you, as the photographer.

What mood does front lighting create?

It creates a soft mood because whatever shadows it creates fall on the back of the subject. If you want dramatic photos, the front light might not be the best choice.
