The generation of sperm via spermatogenesis is a continuous process throughout the reproductive lifetime or season of animals. The end products (sperm) are expelled (spermiation) from the organ, and the next generation of sperm begins to develop from spermatogenic stem cells.
Does spermatogenesis occur continuously?
Spermatogenesis occurs continuously and repeatedly in the germinal epithelium of the seminiferous tubules. In human tubules areas of active spermatogenesis are interspersed with resting epithelium.
What is the duration of spermatogenesis?
The total duration of spermatogenesis takes approximately 4.5 cycles and lasts approximately 30–75 days in the mammalian species already investigated [5, 12].
