Can I grow spelt from seeds?
Sow the spelt seeds by hand or with a hand-held broadcast seed spreader in September for June harvest. Gently rake the seeds into the top 2 inches of soil. Cover with a 2- to 4-inch layer of loose straw to suppress weeds and help retain soil moisture. Spelt seeds will germinate in one to three days.
What crop is spelt?
Spelt is a hulled wheat that was widely grown during Roman times and appreciated for its reliability, versatility, good eating and storage qualities. Legend has it that the Roman army called spelt their ‘Marching Grain’!
