Tinsel. Tinsel is made from PVC, a highly flammable material that once lit, is consumed by fire in seconds. Tinsel is always placed on the tree with fairy lights, so by making sure they don’t touch fairy lights that have a tendency to overheat, you’ll be preventing potential fires.
Why was tinsel banned?
The popular version of the 20th century contained lead until 1972. As you can see in a newspaper article from November 1972, the FDA deemed tinsel an “unnessary risk to children with symptoms of lead poisoning” in August 1971.
Is Christmas garland flammable?
This includes Christmas trees, stockings, tinsel, garland and candles. Natural Christmas trees can be very flammable, especially as their branches and needles begin to dry out. Take down stockings before you light a fire. Don’t let garland and tinsel hang over the mantel close to the fire.
