The width of the moat could reach as much as 12 feet while its depth could be as much as 30 feet. It was for the purpose of constructing an effective moat that medieval castles were often built near a water body such as a river. Water from such a body was then transported to the moat.

Castle moats were often around 12ft wide and 30ft deep and could be even bigger! A drawbridge was raised or lowered so the inhabitants of the castle could enter or exit the castle easily.

You will need to consult the local planning authority and the water board or company. Planning permission would be needed and abstraction of water would need a permit or licence. You may find that your ownership rights may be restricted or have prohibitions which prevent you constructing a moat.
