Peanuts are common in bird seed. Some peanut-free bird seed options are hummingbird nectar, oriole feeders, sunflower seeds, thistle seeds, nyjer seed, or cracked corn. These options do not have peanuts as an ingredient, however, cross-contamination is still a potential risk.
Can I be allergic to bird seed?
Allergy to millet is rare. Type I sensitization to millet can lead to asthma by inhalation and to anaphylaxis by ingestion of millet-containing food [1]. A sensitization to millet via inhalation in bird keepers may also elicit food allergy [2].
Does bird feed contain nuts?
If you keep a bird feeder in your yard, check the ingredients of the bird seed. Many bird seed products contain peanuts, nuts, wheat, and milk products – plus, of course, seeds.
