Do Meteors Come from Comets

Most meteor showers come from comets, whose material is quite fragile. Small comet fragments generally won’t survive entry into our atmosphere. In theory, the Taurids and Geminids could send meteorites down to our surface every once in a while, but no remnants have been traced to them definitively.

Are meteors from comets?

Remember, meteors are meteoroids that enter Earth’s atmosphere. Many meteoroids are fragments from comets or asteroids (both of which we’ll discuss soon), especially from asteroids in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.

Are comets same with meteor?

Comet: A body of ice, rock and dust that can be several miles in diameter and orbits the sun. … It originates from a comet or asteroid. Meteor: A meteoroid that enters the earth’s atmosphere and vaporizes. Also called a “shooting star.”
