After flowering, Echium pininana scatters seed and dies. It self-seeds readily in mild, sheltered parts of the UK, but seed is unlikely to germinate in cooler regions. It has been given the Award of Garden Merit (AGM) by the Royal Horticultural Society.
What do you do with echium after flowering?

Do you cut down echium?
Seedlings or one year old plants are just as vulnerable as those in their second year. However, once you have managed to flower one, the flowering stalk will quickly brown and die off so do not cut it down until the autumn by when the seed will have scattered in all directions.
