Why Are Sunroofs Exploding

How does a car’s sunroof “explode?” While it probably sounds like a really weird concept, a sunroof “explodes” when it randomly, and spontaneously, shatters while you’re driving. The reason why this phenomenon has been called an explosion is due to the loud “bang” that the glass makes when it shatters.

What would cause sunroof to explode?

Large sunroofs are also susceptible to breakage because the glass flexes when the vehicle drives over uneven pavement. The seal between the glass and frame may delaminate and let go, or the sunroof’s clips or mechanisms may hit and shatter the glass.

Can a sunroof break?

Sunroof Explosion /Shattering Small cracks can sabotage the stability of the glass and can cause it to spontaneously shatter. It sounds almost comical and impossible but this has happened a lot in many countries so much so there was a lawsuit against Volkswagen about it.
