What Exactly Is Rumspringa

Rumspringa (Pennsylvania German pronunciation: [ˈrʊmˌʃprɪŋə]), also spelled Rumschpringe or Rumshpringa, is a rite of passage during adolescence, translated in English as “jumping or hopping around,” used in some Amish communities.

To get married in the Amish community, members must be baptized in the church. Outsiders, non-Amish, or ‘English’, as they call the rest of the world, are not permitted to marry within the Amish community.

What happens if you leave Amish?

A member who has left may even be allowed to return within a short time. A member who leaves permanently will, however, be shunned. Shunning means that the person will forever be considered an outsider — a stranger — and will not be allowed to participate in the community ever again. All family ties cease to exist.
