How Does Sick Time Accrue

An accrual policy is one where employees earn sick leave over time, with the accrued time carrying over in each year of employment. In general terms (and subject to some exceptions), employees under an accrual plan must earn at least one hour of paid sick leave for each 30 hours of work (the 1:30 schedule).

Does sick pay reset every year?

So each year, the amount of sick pay already received over the previous 12 months will be offset from an employee’s overall entitlement, until staff have completed 12 months without sickness absence, only then will their entitlement reach the maximum available again.

Do sick days accrue?

Sick leave is accrued at a rate of one hour for each period of 30 hours worked. It can carry over from one year to the next, but an employer can put a cap on it of 48 hours, which is equivalent of six days. An employer may also choose to limit the number of sick days that an employee uses in a year.
