Neer’s test is a simple exam that assesses if your shoulder pain and limited range of motion may be caused by an impingement (pinching of tissue). Your healthcare provider or physical therapist can perform the Neer impingement test as a part of a comprehensive shoulder examination.
What does the Neer's test indicate?
The Neer Impingement Test is a test designed to reproduce symptoms of rotator cuff impingement through flexing the shoulder and pressure application. Symptoms should be reproduced if there is a problem with the supraspinatus or biceps brachii. This test is also associated with the Hawkins-Kennedy Test and Jobe’s Test.
How is impingement syndrome diagnosed?
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI ) and ultrasound can show tears in the rotator cuff tendons and inflammation in the bursa. A diagnosis of impingement syndrome may be made if a small amount of an anesthetic (painkiller), injected into the space under the acromion, relieves your pain.
