- Heavy alcohol and drug use.
- High-risk sexual behavior.
- Witnessing or experiencing violence as a child.
- Being less educated.
- Unemployment.

When these three elements—motivated offenders, suitable targets, and lack of capable guardianship—coalesce in time and space, victimization is likely to occur.
